CRED Jewelery launches “The Ultimate Ethical Engagement Ring”

The Makers of the First Ever Fairtrade Wedding Bands

Cred, the original Fairtrade jeweller, has been using exclusively Fairtrade gold since it’s inception and were the makers of the first ever fairtrade gold wedding bands.

Proud to  have great relations with the small-scale miners in Peru who they visit every six months, Cred have paid $350,000 in Fairtrade premiums to the mining communities since 2011. It is their mission to maintain a short and transparent supply chain from mine to market, supporting Fairtrade miners in shaking up the industry and freeing consumers to choose where their jewellery comes from. Cred are achieving this with fairtrade gold and now they can seize the brilliant new opportunity in Lab Grown Diamonds.

Demand for Lab Grown Diamonds

For decades the diamond industry has been opaque about their supply chain, actively  avoiding to offer transparency and traceability. Cred are proud to be agents of change. They currently offer Canada Mark diamonds with 100% traceability and also Namibian diamonds which are best practice in traditional African mining although traceability is not independently accredited. Cred customers are telling them they want socially and environmentally responsible products and for us the very best opportunity for this is just about to open up in launching a collection made with Lab Grown Diamonds.

How it’s made

Lab grown diamonds are made by simulating the environment at the Earth’s mantel where diamonds were created. Carbon is placed under extreme heat and pressure and layer by layer, molecule by molecule the carbon bonds to a small diamond ‘seed’ using the seed itself as a molecular template. This process takes as little as four days and the result is a rough diamond which can be cut and polished for use in jewellery like any natural mined diamond. The controlled conditions of the laboratory result in a purer diamond, without the trace elements of other minerals that are often found in nature.

Alan Frampton, Cred’s Managing Director states:
"Mining diamonds is an energy intensive and ecologically invasive procedure, affecting fragile ecosystems across the world. Lab Grown diamonds are a victory for the environment, human rights and diamond supply chain transparency.”

He points out that Cred's customers feel reassured that their jewellery is coming from a known and socially responsible system, and that Cred is committed to creating the most ethically responsible offering for its customers. The stones bear a laser mark and are accompanied by an independent certificate to guarantee origin and quality.

Giving customers the choice

Lab Grown Diamonds means cutting out the mine all together. They offer the opportunity to provide a superior quality product that is 100% traceable and is approximately 30% cheaper than mined diamonds.

Quality: Lab Grown Diamonds belong to a category of diamond called Type IIA. Less than 2% of world’s mined diamonds belong to this category, Type IIA diamonds are the most valued and purest form of diamond.

Traceability: All Lab Grown diamonds are environmentally and socially responsible. They are conflict and child labour free and their origin is verified by their certificate and a uniqe laser mark on each stones girdle.

Value: Due to the streamlined production processes of Lab Grown diamonds, Cred can bring them to market more cost effectively than mined diamonds. This means that our 0.30ct Lab Grown Diamond rings are approximately 28% cheaper than natural stone diamond rings, our 0.50ct Lab Grown Diamond rings are 32% cheaper than natural stone diamond rings.

The production of Lab Grown Diamonds has already increased from 325,000 carats in 2013/14 to 4,000,000 carats in 2016/17. In the USA Jewellery industry leaders are predicting that 50% of their diamond inventory will be Lab Grown by 2020.

Giving customer the choice of a Lab Grown Diamond means Cred have the opportunity to transform the jewellery industry to change forever and demonstrate the power of the informed consumer.
