UNCOVERING THE HUMAN COST OF WELLNESS: WEBINAR DISCUSSES HOW WELLNESS BUSINESSES CAN CONFRONT HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES IN SUPPLY CHAINS HEAD ON AND KEEP UP WITH ETHICAL CONSUMER DEMANDS

  • Fairtrade webinar looking at how businesses can be fairer to the producers of popular wellness ingredients like nuts, shea, cocoa butter, and olive oil they source from.

A webinar aimed at the wellness sector hosted by the Fairtrade Foundation, featuring perspectives from Mumanu and Liberation Foods, will aim to encourage businesses to address human rights issues in their supply chain and fulfil consumer demand for products that are free from exploitation. The companies in the panel will share examples of their individual sustainability journeys and the impact achieved with farmers through their partnership.

Taking place on June 16, the 45-minute session will be packed with tips on how to build credibility, trust and value for businesses big or small starting their sustainability journey. They’ll learn how industry peers are tackling some of the challenges, through the lens of three major issues – demand, the climate crisis and income security.

Delegates will also hear about Fairtrade’s consumer pull, and how it can support businesses to meet their sustainability goals through a combination of certification, licensing, and communications tools.

Meanwhile, representing farmers, Tomy Mathews, a cashew farmer and trader/exporter from Kerala, India will share perspectives on how despite the soaring global demand for cashews, farmers and workers too often struggle to make a decent living. He’ll also discuss the dangers farmers face while harvesting and how Fairtrade is working with farmers to overcome these challenges.

The free webinar will take place on Thursday June 16.

Anna Barker, Head of Responsible Business at The Fairtrade Foundation, said: ‘After the disappointment of COP26, shoppers are increasingly looking to businesses to act on their ethical and social concerns.

‘We’re pleased that we can now facilitate this through our FSI certification model and offer Fairtrade ingredients to some of the smaller, more niche commodities, allowing us to support some of these key supply chains within the cosmetics, beauty and wellness industry. The pandemic combined with the increasing effect of climate change, has put pressure on low-income farmers around the world, and many fear being further marginalised by the economic downturn in months to come, so any support we can give them couldn’t come at a better time.’

The full line up of speakers will include:

  • Deborah Grell, Supply Chain Manager at Liberation Foods
  • Sam Thurlby-Brooks, Managing Director at Mumanu
  • Tomy Mathews, Managing Director of Elements and cashew nut farmer, Fairtrade Alliance of Kerala
  • Anna Barker, Head of Responsible Business at The Fairtrade Foundation

Hosted by Will Browning, Head of Partnership Development at The Fairtrade Foundation

The webinar will take place on Thursday 16 June at (11.00-11.45am GBT): register online
